In honor of Black History Month, Upper School students and staff created interactive displays focused on the many contributions of African Americans throughout history. Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Ketanji Brown Jackson was chosen for her many accomplishments, including being the first black woman to serve on the Supreme Court. Entertainers such as Denzel Washington, musicians and songwriters Sam Cooke and Kendrick Lamar, and talk show host Oprah Winfrey were among the subjects in the entertainment sector.
The accomplishments and stories of so many are far too broad to list individually. The displays were colorful and creative, encouraging visiting classmates to ask questions and learn more with presenting students who were well-versed on their chosen subjects, ensuring they were ready to answer any questions their classmates might have.
After perusing the many displays, students and staff were invited to the game room to sample popular dishes from African American culture, including collard greens, sweet potatoes, fried chicken, and more.
The event was a creative learning experience that engaged all the senses. Students educated their peers about the rich and expansive history and accomplishments of African Americans, using music and interactive visual displays, and they capped off the event by sharing delicious tastes and delectable smells with a sampling of favorite dishes from African American cuisine.
